Epson Damper Air Bubble

Hi all,I am hoping some other soul out there might be able to help me.I have an Epson 7880 who was stupid enough to let it sit for too long causing the Magenta line to clog. I have soaked the capping station for over a week. Finally, took it apart and the damper was solid, washed it so it was clean. I then took (give me marks for creativity) a fishing type wire and put it through the ink link to ensure any dried up ink would be clear and put it all back together. Thinking I solved the issue, I turned it on but no luck. I have no magenta in my test prints.I've also changed the Vivid Magenta cartridge in hope of resetting it but no luck.I have no idea how to refill the magenta line and no idea what to try next.

Any help would be greatly (did I mention greatly) appreciated.Christa. I had my magenta line on my 4000 basically stop flowing ink. I know the 4000 and 7800 ( I own both) use the same dampner and I would believe the 7880 probably uses the same or very similar dampner. With a field repair guide I removed the head and replaced the dampner for about 8 dollars.

I only used two different screw drivers and it took about an hour. If you feel comfortable replacing hard drives in computers and laptops and can tinker around a car it was a piece of cake. One thing I did do was when removing the head I pulled some ink through each line removing all the air bubbles from each line, and there was a ton. I am running bulk ink tanks so there was no wasted ink but using a small syringe there wasn't a ton of waste.

The 4000 that I had basically written off works like the day it was put into service. The magenta dampner even when I pulled with all the sucking power of the syringe wouldn't led a drop of magenta through, period. All the other ink flowed with the slightest effort of the syringe. The dampner is basically a small ink cartridge like a epson 2200 size with a very fine stainless steel screen to filter out particles. After replacing the dampner I worked with the clogged magenta and with hot water and a little reverse pressure it finally started, just wanted to see why it didn't work, basically there was particles in the magenta ink that clogged it over time. There are a few sites out there that are more for operators that recommend replacing all the dampers each year and yes, you can do it.

Did you try pulling ink through the damper???? I believe you need to release the ink levers to allow ink to be pulled through the lines and damper. You can remove the damper and give it a try with syringe. If you can't get any ink through the damper then it is clogged solid. My Magenta damper I couldn't get any ink to flow either direction. I did work with some hot water and got the damper finally to flow but had already purchased a new one.

If it is clogged then I would pull from the inlet not the outlet because the stainless screen inside the damper is very fine and that is what is clogged. One thing I realized when I replaced the totally clogged damper was that somehow ink was reversing inside the head and the magenta ink was turning black inside the head / damper? There is cleaning solution that you can inject into the head if it is clogged but I would put money on a clogged Magenta damper. Get a new one or try some very careful hot water injection / suction on the damper. I guess I should have added if you can pull / suck ink through the line and the damper don't put the damper on until all air is out of the lines. Then you would have to only do a normal head cleaning and your magenta should flow as long as the head isn't clogged. There is a red cleaning fluid that quite a few different places sell that you can inject into the head from the damper plug that should clear out any clogs.

My magenta didn't flow for 3 months and it just sat dry in a capping station of a 4000 which isn't that great and I didn't have any problem with ink dried in the head, it just wasn't getting any ink.
